Spirit Animals, LGBTQIA+
and the inspiration of Alebrije
This design will make you smile -
Inspired by Alebrije (Mexican Folk Art created in 1936), this story demonstrates that one dream, one thought, can be manifested into something unique, different and truly beautiful.
According to accounts, during a period of severe illness, Pedro Linares had a vivid dream of a fantastical place resembling a forest. In this dream, various objects like trees, animals, rocks, clouds, and the sky transformed into extraordinary and imaginative creatures, often featuring vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and extraordinary features.
He saw a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with the horns of a bull, a lion with an eagle head, and many more imaginative combinations. Inspired by these dreams, Perdo Linares created sculptures that eventually evolved into the art form known as Alebrijes.
Today, Alebrije is a very popular folk art form. One figure can sell for hundreds of dollars. The word "Alebrijes" itself doesn't have a specific meaning; it was a word that originated from Linares' dream.
In his dream, "All of them were shouting one word: "Alebrijes! Alebrijes! Alebrijes!".

Pearadox is greatly inspired by the manifestation of these visions; from what may be considered impossible, nonexistent, awkward, unattractive, ungodly and horrific, into visually striking and captivating works of beauty. Finding the beauty in yourself and others.
Pearadox Design
In our inspired design, we went for something alittle different. We have a love-sun anemone with embracing tentacles of electric energy and protective horns that emit orbs. We combined the colorful aspects and characteristics of anemomes with the exaggerated colorful aspects of the Alebrjie. They have no eyes, but they see clearly This resilience can be a symbol of strength and the ability to overcome adversity. This ability is often associated with renewal, growth, and healing. The balance between the beauty and potential danger of sea anemones' stinging tentacles can symbolize the delicate equilibrium in nature and in life, where beauty and danger coexist. Sea anemones are known for their ability to endure harsh conditions in the ocean, including strong currents and predators. This resilience can be a symbol of strength and the ability to overcome adversity.
Spirit Animals
Some believe that we are all assigned a spirit animal from the moment of birth that forever protects and guides us from harm. Similar to Pedro’s Alebrije, your spirit animal may be one of multiple and various anatomical and physiological structures, strengths and colors. Alebrji’s usually have elements of air, water, earth and fire and have patterns of stripes, dots, geometric shapes, flowers and flames all often associated with specific traits or qualities that individuals can find inspiration from.
Just as alebrijes showcase a blend of diverse features, strengths, and colors, this concept suggests that one's spirit animal can encompass a variety of anatomical and physiological attributes, reflecting the complexity and diversity of human nature. The incorporation of elements like air, water, earth, and fire in alebrijes aligns with the broader idea of connecting individuals to various natural forces. Similarly, the patterns found on Alebrijes, like stripes, dots, and geometric shapes, could symbolize different aspects of one's personality or experiences. Both the belief in spirit animals and the symbolism of Alebrijes emphasize a connection between individuals and their surroundings. They provide a sense of protection, guidance, and belonging within the larger context of the natural world. Just as each Alebrije is distinct, this belief system suggests that every individual's assigned spirit animal is unique, representing their personal strengths, colors, and attributes.

Cultures
Having a spirit animal is not a new idea. In other cultures such as Chinese, Aboriginal Australian, African, Alaskan Tribes and other Indigenous and Native Americans, spirit animals are believed to be guides or helpers that offer guidance, protection, and insights to individuals or groups. In some Native American cultures, individuals might receive visions or dreams that reveal their spirit animal. These visions are often considered messages from the spiritual realm. Spirit animals are believed to provide guidance and protection throughout a person's life journey and are seen as sources of inspiration and power. They might offer wisdom, strengths, and support during challenges or important life transitions.
Side note - The creation of alebrijes has become an iconic part of Zapotec and Oaxacan culture, showcasing the region's artistic creativity. In Zapotec culture, there is a traditional recognition of a third gender known as "Muxes" (pronounced "moo-shays"). Muxes are individuals who are assigned male at birth but take on roles and identities that are outside the traditional binary gender system. Muxes are widely accepted and celebrated within Zapotec communities. They are considered an important and respected part of the culture, often playing specific roles in family and community life. Muxes often have a gender identity that falls outside the binary norms of male and female. Some Muxes might identify as transgender or as non-binary. The acceptance of muxes has historical and cultural roots that predate Western influence. Muxes have been part of Zapotec culture for generations and demonstrate an acceptance for gender diversity.
LGBTQIA+
Similarly to discovering your spirti animal, some of us in the LGBTQIA+ community connect with "animal identities" as representations of our own experiences, traits, or characteristics. This personal connection can offer guidance, strength, and a sense of role in a symbolic and creative way that represents and connects with certain attributes of our identities. These include, but are not limited to Pup, Bear, Otter, Wolf, Unicorn, Dolphin and Dragon.
In the essence of Alebrijes, the LGBTQIA+ have a vibrant existence, uniqueness, and imaginative combinations. We are powerful and unique works of art that transcend dimensions of categories. Each of us is a testament to universal greatness that hold global significance and inspiration beyond recognition.
The Pearadox Alebrjie inspired collection is not directly affiliated with the Linares family or actual Alebrije's.
